Our farm’s transition from conventional practices to organic grassfed was gradual. I began to realize what I least liked was tilling the soil and spraying chemicals. We began by converting a field every year to grass and legume forages in 2000. We raised and finished our first 5 cattle on grass in 2005 and today maintain a herd of approximately 70 angus and angus crossbred cattle. We rotationally graze our animals so they are moved to a fresh salad bar of grass, legumes (clover and alfalfa) and forbs every day. This allows them to balance their own diet and eat till they are content while also resting each paddock 50-60 days so it can completely recover until being grazed again. When animals are managed as they would naturally, there is no need for chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics. Also our practices are vastly improving our land by reducing soil erosion, increasing natural microbial and earthworm activity, and building organic matter. We stockpile forages in the fall for winter grazing as the weather allows and also make some hay from the abundant production of spring.
Our farming practices are not only sustainable but rewarding as well. We look forward to each day and each year as we improve our land and learn more about natural methods while walking this land with our animals.
